Registration begins Oct. 1; AUDITIONS SET FOR OCT. 18-19

HERE'S WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT 2024 AUDITIONS

Who is eligible to audition?
Auditions are open to all students, grades 7-12, residing within or attending school in the Cave Creek School District or north of Carefree Highway in the Deer Valley School District.

How do I sign up?
Online registration begins October 1 at www.Calendly.com/upscalesingersaz/auditions.

What style of song should I sing?
Choose two songs with different styles of music that show your range and voice quality and make you look and sound amazing -- songs that you love and feel confident performing. You must sing from memory. The judges will not give preference to a certain style of song over another but will be looking for singers that “show” more of their talent.

Do I need an accompanist?
An accompanist and CD/mobile device player will be provided; however, you are strongly encouraged to bring your own accompanist if possible. If using a pre-recorded accompaniment, be sure there are no vocals on the recording and bring an auxiliary cord or connect through Bluetooth. Singers may not sing a cappella, accompany themselves or use any live accompaniment other than piano.

What should I wear?
Ladies should wear a dress or a skirt and blouse. They do not need to be dressy. Guys should wear slacks (not jeans) and a collared shirt. A vest or jacket would be fine, too. You should dress for your audition as if it were an actual performance.

Where are the auditions held?
Desert Foothills Lutheran Church 29305 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale, Arizona. If you need help or directions that day, call Debbie Joy, Scheduling Chairman, at 623-363-6690.

Who are the judges and how many are there?
The two judges are current members of the Upscale Singers who have extensive backgrounds in singing. They have been professional performers themselves and have received prestigious vocal training.

What will it be like when I do my audition?
Plan to arrive 10 minutes early to check in so you will have time to relax. At that time, we will double check that we have your contact information correct. You will wait in the church lobby and have the opportunity to hear some of the other auditions taking place. You then will give your sheet music, accompaniment CD or digital device to the accompanist and go over any special instructions. Even though this is a “formal” audition experience, please know that everyone is on your side and wants you to be comfortable and do your best. If you make a mistake on your lyrics or need to start over on a section, don’t feel as if you have ruined your chances. Keep singing and smile!

When will I hear the results?
Everyone will be contacted by email as soon as possible after the auditions with the results. That's why it’s important at auditions to make sure your email and mailing addresses are correct. We will not be holding an award ceremony this year. Winners will receive their award certificates by email along with the judges’ comments.

I hear the first-place winners sing in a concert with the Upscale Singers. Is this correct?
Yes, the first-place winners will be asked to sing at the Upscale Singers’ Christmas concerts Dec. 7 and 8. These are well-attended concerts and will be a great experience for our two division winners.
