Cheryl Siebs Memorial Vocal Scholarship Information
ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS ABOUT AUDITION DAY
How do I sign up?
Online registration at www.Calendly.com/upscalesingersaz/auditions.
What style of song should I sing?
You will sing two songs with different styles of music that show off your voice best. The judges will not give preference to a certain style of song over another, but they will give preference to the singers that “show” more of their talent.
Do I need an accompanist?
Students auditioning will sing from memory two songs of their choice with piano or prerecorded accompaniment. An accompanist and CD/mobile device player will be provided; however, you are strongly encouraged to bring your own accompanist if possible. If you are using our accompanist, please email your sheet music five days in advance to firstname.lastname@example.org so our accompanist can prepare for your audition. Selections need not be Classical in nature, but should clearly show the singer’s range and voice quality. The job of your audition songs is to make you look and sound amazing. Choose songs that are tailored around your voice and personality to show you off to your best advantage. Choose songs that you love to perform and that make you feel confident. If using a pre-recorded accompaniment please be sure there are no vocals on the recording and bring an auxiliary cord or connect thru Bluetooth. Singers may not sing a cappella (without accompaniment), accompany themselves, or use any live accompaniment other than piano.
What should I wear?
Ladies should wear either a skirt and blouse or a dress. They do not need to be dressy. Guys should wear slacks (not jeans) and a collared shirt. A vest or jacket would be fine, too. You should dress for your audition as if it were an actual performance.
Where are the auditions held? (DIFFERENT LOCATION FROM LAST YEAR)
Desert Hills Lutheran Church, 29305 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85266. Need help or directions that day – 480-203-7503 (Barbara Kerner, Scheduling Chairman.)
Who are the judges and how many are there?
The two judges are current members of the Upscale Singers who have extensive backgrounds in singing. They have been professional performers themselves and have received prestigious vocal training.
What will it be like when I do my audition?
Because of COVID-19 restrictions, new steps will have to be taken for the auditions. Plan to arrive 10 minutes early so you will have time to relax. Call us when you arrive so we can check you in. You will wait in your car until you are called to come in to the lobby. We will have hand sanitizer available. Because of current restrictions, no one except their accompanist, if applicable, will be able to accompany the singer inside the building. At that time, we will double check that we have your contact information correct. If still mandated by the city, masks will be required upon entering the church until you are on the stage. When it is your turn, one of our helpers will walk you into the church sanctuary and introduce you to the judges. They may ask you a couple of questions just to help you get relaxed. You then give your sheet music or accompaniment CD or digital device to the accompanist and go over any special instructions. Even though this is a “formal” audition experience, please know that everyone is on your side and wants you to be comfortable and do your best. If you make a mistake on your lyrics or need to start over on a section, don’t feel as if you have just ruined your chances. Keep singing and smile!
When will I hear the results?
Everyone will be contacted by mail as soon as possible after the auditions. This is why it’s important at auditions that you check to see if your mailing address is correct.
I hear the first-place winners sing in a concert with the Upscale Singers. Is this correct?
Yes, the first-place winners will be asked to sing at the Upscale Singer’s next concerts. These are well-attended concerts and will be a great experience for our two division winners.
